KS4 Health & Social Care

Key Stage 4 OCR National Certificate Health and Social Care

(equivalent to one GCSE)

This course should inspire and enable students to: understand the need for effective communication; understand aspects of growth and development in children; investigate the range of career options available in the health, social care and early years sectors and be able to apply the care values required when providing care for service users.  Learners will develop a critical and analytical approach to problem solving in health and social care and early years sectors and examine issues that affect the nature and quality of human life, including an appreciation of diversity and cultural issues.

The qualification is taught over two years and consists of four units.

R021 Essential values of care for use with individuals in care settings

This unit is externally assessed via examination. This unit focuses on the rights of individuals and will instil the values of care to be used when working in a health, social care or early years environment. All good practice is based on these values and enables those who use and work in care settings to apply quality practice. The unit also provides an overview of legislation and its impact on the care settings and covers the hygiene, safety and security matters that relate to promoting a healthy and safe environment.

R022 Communicating and working with individuals in health, social care and early years settings

This unit is internally assessed by a teacher-assessed coursework assignment. Work is moderated externally to ensure consistency with national standards. This unit helps develop the underpinning knowledge and understanding of how to communicate effectively and what personal qualities will contribute to the creation of a caring environment when working with individuals in a health, social care and early years setting. Learners will be able to demonstrate effective communication skills that are needed to work in a health, social care or early years setting by planning effectively for interactions in a health, social care and early years setting.

R022 Planning for employment in health, social care and children and young people’s workforce

This unit is internally assessed by a teacher-assessed coursework assignment. Work is moderated externally to ensure consistency with national standards.  Learners will investigate the employment opportunities within the sectors, to extract information relevant to specific work roles that interest them, to investigate the recruitment process, to understand the employment requirements in the health, social care or children and young people’s workforce, to prepare a personal career plan and prepare for an interview.

R028 Understanding the development and protection of young children in an early years setting

This unit aims to provide learners with a key understanding of the physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social development of 0–5 year olds in an early years setting. It will enable learners to understand the importance of promoting a safe environment when working with children in which they are looked after and understand the areas of risk that can endanger children’s lives in an early years setting.
